Named after its discoverer, the Dutch explorer and navigator Abel Tasman, the Tasman Sea merges with the Indian Ocean to the west and the Coral Sea to the north. At its widest point, between Sydney, Australia, and the North Island, it extends for 1,900 km (1,200 mi).
