Akutagawa Ryūnosuke (1892-1927), Japanese author, whose works reflect his interest in the life of feudal Japan. He was born in Tokyo, and educated at the University of Tokyo. His first published story, “Rashomon” (1915; trans. 1952), was combined with a later story, “In a Grove” (1921; trans. 1952), to form the basis for the beautiful film Rashomon (1950), directed by Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa.
