Yawl, class of fore-and-aft rigged sailing vessel, having a mainsail farther forward than that of a sloop and a small mizzenmast abaft, or astern, the rudder post; the mizzensail is smaller than that on a ketch. The term yawl is also applied to a ship's dinghy, or small, oared boat. See also Sail.
