Campbell Island, mountainous island, New Zealand, in the South Pacific Ocean. Although only 50 km (30 mi) in circumference, the semicircular island has good harbors that are used as provision depots but are not permanently inhabited. New Zealand’s Sub-Antarctic Islands—which along with Campbell Island include the Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands, Bounty Islands, and the Snares—were collectively named a World Heritage Site in 1998. Area, 166 sq km (64 sq mi).
