Windows Live® Search Results Cook Strait, channel separating North Island from South Island, New Zealand, and connecting the Tasman Sea on the west with the Pacific Ocean on the east. It varies in width from about 24 to 97 km (about 15 to 60 mi). The strait is named for the British explorer Captain James Cook, who discovered it in 1769.
