Ross Dependency, area of land and sea extending from the South Pole to latitude 60° South, and bounded by longitude 160° East and 150° West. Included within the area are the Ross Ice Shelf on the continent of Antarctica and the Ross Sea, one of the most important centers of the whaling industry in the Antarctic Circle. Numerous exploratory expeditions made their headquarters in the Ross Dependency, including those of the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and the American explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd.
