Windows Live® Search Results Stewart Island, island, southern New Zealand, in the South Pacific Ocean. It is south of South Island, from which it is separated by Foveaux Strait. The island is mountainous, rising to its highest point in Mount Anglem (980 m/3,215 ft above sea level). It was sighted by the British in 1808 and sold to them by the indigenous Maori in 1864. Area, 1,740 sq km (670 sq mi); population (2001) 387.
