Windows Live® Search Results Celebes Macaque, monkey of the macaque family. The Celebes macaque, also called the black macaque, is a sturdy, tailless, thickset monkey that is almost as large as a baboon. It has heavy, prominent eyebrows and a long, hairless face. The rest of its body is covered with long, black hair that forms a pyramid on top of its head. The Celebes macaque lives in troops and frequents the mangrove forests near the shores of Sulawesi (or Celebes), an island in the Republic of Indonesia. It is also found on the shores of some of the Philippine Islands. The Celebes macaque spends much of its time in the trees, where it eats leaves and fruits. However, it also feeds in grasslands near the forest and visits the beaches at low tide to search for marine animals to eat. It has been listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Scientific classification: The Celebes macaque is a member of the family Cercopithecidae and is classified as Macaca nigra.
