Loyalists, also known as Tories, colonists whose allegiance remained with Great Britain during the American Revolution (1775-1783). Loyalists were not confined to a particular colony, class, or occupation, although the strongest resistance to the Revolution came from those serving the crown. Because of the animosity from other colonists, many Loyalists fled to Canada during and after the war. See also Tory.
