In 1947 the archibishop of Canterbury, the highest official in the Church of England, presided over the wedding of Princess Elizabeth (now Elizabeth II, queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) to Prince Philip, who became the Duke of Edinburgh upon their marriage. The couple’s wedding vows contain the traditional promises to love and honor one another so long as “both shall live.”
